British bridal wear’s certainly come a long way, baby. You’re now expected to serve a socials-savvy lewk, and if it could be an ethically-made one, all the better. Luckily, there are plenty of UK-based designers creating inclusive, sustainable fashion-forward ensembles that exude a catwalk-to-aisle energy for the next generation of brides.

The Cool Britannia spirit of the 90s is very much alive in 2024’s UK bridal offering, from Savannah Miller’s deceptively simple selection of slinky showstoppers to Sassi Holford’s parade of super-luxe nostalgic silhouettes and Sanyukta Shrestha’s cruelty-free vegan silk confections.

Lexi Blazer Dress & Dandelion Sleeves | Halfpenny London

SUITED STATEMENT

Trailblaze this beautifully proportioned, double-breasted dress from Halfpenny London.

On the subject of modern elegance, we’re living for Halfpenny London’s Balance Chapter Two collection, which debuted at NYBW 2023. This latest instalment from one of the industry’s most curve-friendly designers embraced extremes, from crisp tailoring and graphic lines to decadent 3D florals and exaggerated volume. The label’s signature structured bodices pair beautifully with playfully proportioned add-ons for a thoroughly fresh sartorial alchemy.

Una Mini | Rita Colson

SPARKLE BABY

This thigh-skimming sequin organza fit from Rita Colson is made for only the feistiest of fiancées.

Channelling a similar sense of whimsy, Rita Colson’s all-new Resurgence bridal wear range is a study in main-character dressing. From forward-thinking flourishes (the frothy Aurora top is the ultimate extra) and exquisite tailoring (there’s a trouser suit to die for) to classic cuts with a 21st century twist and plenty of sparkle, the designer’s high fashion credentials are clear in this technically breathtaking collection of big-day styles, with a look to suit every style of 2024 bride, from femme fatales and disco divas to festival babes.

Amazon | Kindling Bridal

DAINTY YET DEFINED

Paired with the brand’s sublime Morena slip, Kindling’s chiffon Amazon gown is the ultimate midsummer dream: scalloped lace trims, ruffled cuffs, a puddle train and open back. What more could a boho babe ask for?

Kindling’s modern take on romance is evident in the new Move Mountains range, which comprises an array of super-fresh gowns and separates. Clean lines and sheer layers pair with soft frills and intricate details to great ethereal effect. Made-to-order at the independent brand’s Yorkshire HQ, the collection embodies a woman-led, free-spirited feel that puts the bride at the core of everything, from its high-quality fabrics and slow fashion approach to bespoke styling and customisable options. It’s an authentic, heartfelt approach that resonates with tomorrow’s brides-to-be, and that we predict will be an Instagram sensation.

Modernity was also on Katy Britton’s mood board for 2024. With an array of eco and GOTS-certified silks used, the designer’s commitment to responsible production makes her new collection, which exudes a retro-modern bohemian glamour, even more impressive. We love the sexy cut-outs, filmy chiffon and Mikado ruffles.

Margaux Jumpsuit | E&W Couture

STATELY SILHOUETTES

This E&W Couture jumpsuit has pockets(!) and serious swagger – team with one of the brand’s pretty sheer crop tops and hit the dance floor.

Also flying the flag for ethical fabrics and inclusivity, E&W Couture’s showroom rack features an array of vegan-friendly samples in sizes 4 to 28, with unlimited made-to-order sizing available upon consultation. 2024’s State of Mind line features a dizzying array of edgy crop tops, flowing skirts and glitzy overlay gowns, however, the Welsh label’s earlier ranges remain evergreen, with effortless slips, separates and shimmery embellishments. If timeless pixie dream girl is your aesthetic, this label should be on your radar.

You’re known for your classical elements and timeless design. The new Robes de Rêve collection is a little more playful, modern and experimental – what’s the inspiration behind this?

This collection was inspired by baroque mansions, Italian gardens and grand summerhouses… all dream venues that require dream dresses. Using luxury French laces, 3D embossed embroideries and sumptuous silk fabrics, we combine sophisticated, elegant silhouettes with our flattering corsetry.

A gown from the collection that sets your heart alight…

Milla – It just oozes romance. It’s modern in a romantic print yet refined and still very bridal. Its voluminous and dramatic, yet light to wear in a Italian mikado silk, with optional sleeves and a bow to allow the bride to add their own style.

DESIGN SIGNATURES

+ POWER SILHOUETTES

+ EXPERT TAILORING AND CORSETRY

+ INTRICATE APPLIQUÉS AND LAYERS

Three words to sum up this collection.

ROMANTIC, LUXURY, MODERN

How you choose fabrics to work with? As a designer, why do you think a bride must care about the cut and fabric of her gown?

Luxury is about a feeling as much as a look, which is how I choose the fabrics. They are also lightweight to allow movement and generous layers, which gives an extra element of elegance and sophistication.

A top trend you can see emerging in bridal fashion in 2024?

Corsetry – women are beginning to see and feel the benefits of a fully constructed gown again, as well as appreciating the beauty of a simple gown, cut well and enhanced by a beautifully cut corset.

What’s next for Josephine Scott as a brand?

We’re launching our new label very soon, Avenue by Josephine Scott, which has a very different look – modern dresses for adventurous brides. On a personal level, I just want to continue creating dream gowns that make brides feel and look like a queen on their special day.

About Zahra Batool

Long before she became a Master Designer, decades before she was the founder and CEO of ZB Couture, Zahra Batool was just another little girl with big dreams and even bigger talent. Growing up in Pakistan, there was nothing that made Zahra happier than a box full of crayons or a few bottles of paint. As a result, she spent hours upon hours creating beautiful pictures and fantasising about becoming a real artist when she grew up.

Brand Breakdown

ZB Couture features hand-painted, made-to-order gowns for bridal and formal occasions. Each wedding gown offers timeless and classic beauty through Zahra’s intricately hand-painted motifs on luxury fabrics of the highest quality. Every ZB Couture gown starts with a concept inspired by nature. Zahra designs her floral motifs and then works for 30—40 hours rendering the motifs onto her fabric using the finest fabric paints.

Sustainability At The Core

Each ZB Couture gown is made with high-end luxury fabrics that are made from natural fibres. The vast majority of the fabric they use is silk. In cutting the fabric, they always plan the layout to minimise waste. Any waste that is created in the making of one dress is refashioned into other items, or used to test design concepts and swatch paints for future projects.

We caught up with Zahra at NYBFW 2023 to find out a little more about her collections of wedding dresses and occasion wear..

Tell us a little bit about ZB Couture and your Inception as a Brand?

quote icon

OUR GOWNS ARE CREATED FOR THE BRIDE WITH A SINGULAR FASHION VISION, LOOKING TO STAND OUT IN A SEA OF STARK WHITE.

ZAHRA, ZB COUTURE

ZB Couture's mission is to promote sustainable fashion to honour the environment and changing bride's mindsets to respecting our surroundings, using ethically produced apparel rather than feeding the world fast fashion.

What was the Inspiration Behind your Latest Pieces?

The timeless elegance of ‘peonies’ inspired my latest collection, ‘Symphony of peony’. With luxurious textures and intricate details, the peony is blended with European architectural elements. From delicate buds to flowers in full bloom, every stage of the peony is beautifully captured and hand painted on luxurious silk fabrics, in subtle hues of blush, pink, gold, pearl, and wispy shades of blue.

What are your Favourite Materials to Work with?

My favourite material to work with is Silk. All of my three collections showcase the vast variety and ranges of silk fabrics.

Do you Design Wedding Dresses with Inclusive Sizing?

We are a size inclusive women's clothing brand, as we believe that beauty comes in all sizes and shapes.

Describe your Gown's Style in Three Words...

CLASSIC | ARTISTIC | ETHEREAL

What makes a ZB Couture Wedding Gown Standout from the Crowd?

Because every woman is unique, each design can be customised and personalised. Every silhouette and hand-painted design results in a couture gown that enhances and complements the wearer. And because my designs are timeless, my gowns are designed to be worn again and again.

Mesmerised by the unique beauty of Zahra's gowns too? Check out her website for more details and to book a consultation.

RITA COLSON

With a background in both high fashion and commercial design, this London-based bridalwear visionary creates both bespoke fits and versatile capsule collections with contemporary flair. Light, easy-to-wear modern silhouettes that blur the line between classic bridal and luxe eveningwear are a hallmark of Rita’s design, producing elegant gowns, sharp suits and lust-worthy separates that can be customised to your desires.

From the dreamily diaphanous Aurora top to the super-tailored Carla trouser suit, there’s something for every mood here.

ANDREA HAWKES

An immaculate fit, natural fabrics and making the bride the focal point are the cornerstones of Andrea’s collections, with latest line Amaryllis embodying an ultra-modernist, sculpted vibe. Key design features include contoured corsetry, statement sleeves, structured silken shapes, pockets (because who doesn’t love them?!) and a wholly sustainable, ethical ethos.
Whether the vows take place in the city or on the beach, these deceptively subtle, supremely chic pieces are ideal for girls who want no-fuss sophistication. Consider us obsessed.

KATE FEARNLEY

Details, texture and embellishment: no one does all-dressed-in-white drama quite like Kate. An award-winning bridalwear designer with two decades in the industry under her couturier belt, she delivers epic romance through the medium of tulle, silk, satin and lace. Designed and handmade in her North Yorkshire studio, new collection Awaken’s fashion-forward yet vintage-inspired gowns are created with movement, freedom and comfort in mind – perfect for dancing the night away!

www.katefearnley.com

Fringing, 3D floral appliqué and feathery lace, we’re suckers for boho-luxe features and this designer delivers them in abundance.

ELLA KATE

Sustainability is at the heart of the Ella Kate brand, which designs and produces its interchangeable bridalwear editions in a way that allows personalisation and avoids mass production. Based in Derbyshire, the label combines its low carbon footprint with a laid-back, edgy aesthetic divided into two styles – Ella and Kate. The former is all about modern simplicity, from silk crepe separates to full-length silhouettes, while the latter speaks to a wilder soul. Think sequins and sparkle.

LEIGH HETHERINGTON

Couturier and bridal maven Leigh offers two lines and a bespoke service alongside ranges by Watters, Ellis Bridals and Rembo Styling. The festival-friendly Be by Leigh Hetherington designs have a bohemian feel with hints of 70s’ disco and Victoriana: think crop-top-and-skirt co-ords, fringing and figure-hugging lace, while the Leigh Hetherington collection oozes classical elegance, from A-line tulle ballgowns to 1920s-style column slips.
Handmade accessories? Leigh is on another level when it comes to conjuring up full body bridal styling.

FREDA BENNET

Pooling their respective design and pattern-cutting skills, Dartford-based design duo Christine and Jane - the talents behind Freda Bennet - have created a brand with a balance of contemporary edge and feminine glamour that treads the line between trendy and timeless. Luminous satin and structured lines meet in the latest classic range, while alternative brides should flock to the Urban collection – sequinned tulle separates and pearl-beaded Mikado silk sheath dresses aplenty.
We love how versatile the FB range is. There’s a dress to suit every venue – and woman.

DANIEL CHU STUDIO

New kid on the bridal block Daniel Chu has a penchant for high-octane glamour, which is evident in his 16-piece debut line, Series 1. The Manchester-based designer’s aesthetic is ideal for the bride who likes to push the boundaries, from lacy crop tops paired with a full-length silk skirt to a sleek, fitted long-sleeve dress with illusion cut-outs and a thigh-high slit and pooling train.
Viewing bespoke bridal as an “art form”, you know your gown will be nothing less than a modern masterpiece with Daniel at the helm.

EDEN KESHIA

Combining an environmentally-conscious approach with an artistic, bespoke aesthetic, Eden offers her brides-to-be an extraordinary design experience – celebrating each woman’s individuality through inviting input and opinions along the way, from initial sketches to the real results. With a passion for intricate details, Eden is a master at creating original surface patterns and layered embroideries adorned with glass beads and crystals. Bring on the sparkle, we say…

www.edenkeshia.com

It’s not just about the dress: Eden will rustle up a complementary veil and lingerie too. What more could an exacting engaged babe ask for?

SAVIN LONDON

Hand-painted creations, sumptuous creations and a signature botanical style like no other. SAVIN swept to fame through the iconic Alika gown, a clean-cut design groundbreaking in its detail and trendsetting in its touch, which has now paved the way for a streak of sublime collections boasting sheer, stratospheric beauty – putting this designer on another pedestal. The latest? A Moment of Light collection. Get to know, now.
Cover star – SAVIN shines bright on this issue’s cover.
