HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT!

As we are diving straight into the new year (I know, we can't believe its 2022 either) here at Belle we have put together our 10 most Instagramable cakes, to give you all the edible inspo for the upcoming wedding season. From asymmetric designs to Asian-inspired islands, our Guest List suppliers have got your cake needs covered (in icing or buttercream, whichever you'd prefer).

WREN CAKE DESIGN

For cakes with artisan elegance and a fine art finish, we love the boho vibes of this cakery that give a nod to their Lake District home. At Belle we are OBSESSING over this asymmetrical design! For brides looking for something totally different, to catch their guests eyes on their day, this three-tiered cubic design with small bas-relief details and handmade sugar pussy willow looks like it should be in a modern art gallery.

Head to @wrencakedesign_ and www.wrencakedesign.co.uk!

WREN CAKE DESIGN

Who said it had to be a white wedding? We are loving this dark woodland-themed three-tiered cake. Surrounded by moss on the tree trunk it is stood on, this design adds a totally dramatic feel to your day.

Head to @wrencakedesign_ and www.wrencakedesign.co.uk!

BOTANICAL CAKES

Producing a vast array of baking goods, Hannah’s designs are all infused with a rustic and bohemian flare, produced using local and naturally sourced products.

Full of drama and character, this cake has it ALL. Ruffles, dried foliage, sugar flowers and rice paper sails, we are having to pick our mouths up off the floor after seeing this design. A total work of art, it looks too good to eat!

Head to @botanicalcakes and www.botanical-cakes.co.uk!

BOTANICAL CAKES

Negative space has become an iconic element of Hannah’s designs and we LOVE the drama of this marbled terracotta, gold and brown, 3 (4 if you count the gap) tiered design! Decorated with gorgeous dried florals in a complimenting colour scheme, this cake has all the wow factor!

STICKY SPONGE CAKE STUDIO

Creating edible works of art, Sticky Sponge Cake Studio was a finalist for the Best Wedding Cake Company in the National Wedding Awards 2020, we’re not surprised and we don’t think you’ll be either!

Made as a tropical island with a waterfall flowing down the side, covered with a jungle in which the animals are hiding we can’t believe this Borneo-inspired cake is actually real – or edible! Going totally against the grain of your typical cake design, we LOVE how personal this cake feels, it’s nothing you have seen before!

Head to @stickysponge and www.stickysponge.co.uk!

CAKES BY ALISON FAWKES

This Forrest green circular base is totally striking against the stark white three-tiers topping this. Enthralled in a nude to clementine spectrum bouquet, this cake makes a total statement with its chic, luxe finish.

It’s a big talking point, and the highlight of the day for many, so getting your food right on your wedding day is vital.

Read on to make sure no one goes hungry at your soirée!

What? Sharing Feast
When? All Summer
Why? Allows your wedding to be more social, relaxed and fun!

With different trends emerging across the wedding industry, the demand for a more informal wedding is increasing, and here at Baba we have the perfect menus to cater for this. Let's be honest, the food is what your guests will be waiting for, so why not surprise them with a flavoursome feast that’s a delight to the eyes as well as the taste buds.

quote icon

OUR BESPOKE SHARING FEAST MENU IS PERFECT FOR SUMMER. IT FEATURES SPICED PULLED LAMB PAIRED WITH LUSCIOUS, VIBRANT SALADS, AND A RHUBARB CREME BRÛLÉE TO FINISH (TO NAME JUST A FEW).

BABA GANOUSH

COVID SAFE:

We are aware of the worry surrounding the idea of incorporating sharing elements to your special day in these unpredictable times, but we can put your mind at rest. Our sharing feasts are usually shared between 6-8 guests, and we can provide each guest with individual tongs, so there will be no need to change your menu according to the current climate - result!

Top Tip: Consider the Seasons

From our perspective, we are very fortunate to be in the heart of Yorkshire where we have a fantastic larder of produce and suppliers right on our doorstep. We love to incorporate delicious seasonal and local foods into our menu, whether its lamb, wild garlic, asparagus, or rhubarb. We always encourage our clients to try and design a menu that is within season to make their wedding feast even more memorable and tasty.

What? Strawberries
When? July
Why? Who doesn’t love a big juicy strawb?

British strawberries are delicious and often take us back to pick your own childhood memories. Our Strawberry and Champagne Cheesecake is divine and provides the perfect summer pudding for your big day.

What? Tomatoes
When? August
Why? The British tomato season runs from June to October, so August is the perfect time to catch them at their peak.

In a summer sharing feast, people may think the star of the show is the main element i.e. the meat, but here at Baba we are crazy about sides and exciting salads! And, when it comes to salads, there’s no better ingredient than tomatoes. Our head chef Matt’s favourite memory is picking fresh tomatoes from his grandad’s greenhouse, and having them on a warm summer’s day with a little salt and pepper and fresh bread. Great on bruschetta and in soups too!

quote icon

SWEET, TANGY TOMATOES ARE DELICIOUS IN ALL SORTS OF SAVOURY DISHES AND WILL GO DOWN A STORM WITH GUESTS

BABA GANOUSH

What? Damsons
When? September
Why? The tiny purple damson is a quirky pocket rocket of a fruit, bringing a true taste of summer to your wedding banquet…

Matt’s dad and step mum have damson trees, so we use these to make our own damson gin chutney using York gin (it have become a tradition to have a little of last year’s damson gin whilst we pick the produce!) A favourite dish of ours is our Fig and Baked Ribblesdale Goats Cheese Tart with Pine Nuts, York Honey and Damson Gin Chutney. The perfect starter for your summer wedding.

For all the foodies out there (let’s face it, who isn’t?!), the cake is the piéce de rèsistance of a wedding day.

A centrepiece for your guests to marvel at, a slice of sweet deliciousness following your meal, and a personalised masterpiece of you as a couple – there’s no desert quite like it. For the best, meet Emma...

Marley Rose Cakes is a Yorkshire-based baker with a real talent in creating captivating wedding cakes.

We spoke to Emma, the brilliant baker behind the terrifically tasty tiers, to discover just why she should be the first port of call for your wedding cake.

Stacey J Evans Photography

Tell us a little bit about your journey into designing dream wedding cakes.

For a long time I was in the financial services industry, but craved something more creative and rewarding.

My love for the craft started when selecting a fabulous cake maker for my own wedding back in 2016. I helped out with the design process and through exploring all the techniques, additions and flavours on offer, I got a great insight into the industry.

Finally, when my daughter arrived, it gave me the perfect opportunity to turn my baking from a hobby into a business – and borrowing my daughters name for the business – Marley Rose Cakes became real!

Emily Santoro Photography

Is there a particular style you love to create?

It’s such a diverse and creative industry, but my favourite style to create almost always incorporates free-hand painting in cocoa butter.

I prefer painting flowers as you can ‘go with the flow’ with them whilst making them really personalised, but I love when a challenge presents itself too.

I’m no professional artist, but if it’s pretty, I’ll do it!

Your favourite flavour?

That’s a tough one, I still think the classics are classics for a reason, but depending on how I feel, it’s either Salted Caramel or Cherry Bakewell for me.

Three words to describe your creations?

I’m going to try and be clever with this one to avoid being cliché and say…
‘Attention to detail’.

What areas do you cover geographically with your cakes?

Most of Yorkshire really, but it’s always worth getting in touch to ask!

What do you think is a huge trend for 2021?

I really think 2021 will be the year of the super personalised cakes as so many have had to cancel, postpone or severely amend their weddings just to be able to get the day to happen.

What better way to celebrate finally getting hitched than a cake that screams the personal style, interests or even likeness of the couple!

Are there any new or additional products on the horizon for you in 2021?

I have recently added my own whimsical, hand-made Bride and Groom model toppers that are made to order and can be personalised.

I’m currently also in the process of adding hand-painted calligraphy that can be added to your cake in the form of your favourite text, poem, or just your initials too.

Ultimately, I will be taking the business into a direction that I really enjoy – dedicating more time to creating my beautiful wedding cakes.

Tis the season to be jolly (and eat copious amounts of cake).
While tiers are probably the last thing you want to hear about right now, we promise you’ll be interested in these sweeter ones…

Christmas is the perfect time to start thinking about your wedding cake – namely because you can do a fair bit of market research when there’s festive feasting on the go.
But don’t dive straight in for the jugular – although you might want to – there’s a few things you need to consider before you order your wedding cake.
Where will you get it from? How much should I spend? When do I need to order it? And perhaps the more important questions – what flavour will you go for? how many tiers should it be?
We’ve enlisted the help of tried-and-trusted wedding cake expert and #guestlist baker The Vintage Cake Fairy to answer all those worries with her top five tips for choosing your wedding tiers.
Cue the cake…

1. PICK YOUR BAKER CAREFULLY

First things first, you need to think about the style of cake you want and chose the correct baker to fulfil it.
This cake will probably be the most expensive cake you will ever buy, so make sure the design is exactly how you want it.
There are so many great cake makers out there that have different skill sets, so if you want beautiful delicate sugar flowers, or a full on novelty cake, then pick a cake maker that has experience with your desired look.

Cake: Vintage Cake Fairy

2. THINK ABOUT YOUR BUDGET

Good cakes are not cheap and cheap cakes are usually not good. You really do get what you pay for.

3. TASTE, TASTE, TASTE

I think you'll all like this part...
At the end of the day, you are buying a cake, a cake that you are serving to your guests, so you need to make sure it tastes good.
You need a good balance of style and substance, not only does it need to look the part it also needs to taste the part, too.

Cake: Vintage Cake Fairy

4. IT’S ALL IN THE BASE

If you want a fruitcake tier it doesn’t have to be the bottom one.
A properly stacked and support cake means that you can have a heavy fruitcake on top of the lightest sponge cake without any collapsing issues.

5. DON’T LEAVE IT TILL LAST MINUTE

Cake makers can sometimes book up months, even years in advance, especially during the busy Summer months and other key important dates.
So if you know you would like a certain cake maker get booked in as soon as you can, then you will have peace of mind that your wedding cake is in the safest hands possible.
I usually advise booking around 12-9 months for out of season dates and 16-12 months if your date is a more popular one.

Originally not a cake at all, back in ancient Rome the groom would break a loaf of barley bread over the brides head at the end of their wedding to symbolise fertility. This later evolved into a pile of spiced buns in medieval England, and then pies and finally wedding cakes.
These days wedding cakes are about so much more than tradition, I mean LOOK at them! With cakes such as this decadent tower by Rosie’s Cakes, and the trendy rustic work of The Master Cakesmith, the sky really is the limit.

Whether you want a traditionally iced slice, a rustic, naked cake or one of the ever popular profiterole towers we have you covered. Choosing your perfect cake isn’t always… well… a piece of cake. So we’ve searched far and wide to bring Belle Bridal readers some of our favourite wedding cakes, to help make the decision a bit easier for you.

This statement cake by The Cake Gardenbrings together the rich, nobility of gold, with a contemporary painted effect and contrast botanicals for a standout result.
Barefoot Bakermade one couple this pastel dream of a cake, sitting on a bed of florals and topped with a unique, monogrammed cake-topper.

DESSERT TABLES
One cake? Two cakes? FIVE? If you have a sweet tooth, why not turn it into a centrepiece at your wedding? Dessert tables are hot on trend and there are so many variations to choose from - there’s something for every bride, such as this sumptuous, side-table display by Bohemian Bakehouse.

Take a look at this patisserie pasture by Sadie May Cakes, with a selection of cupcakes and macaroons surrounding the floral encrusted cake.

Or how about this super trendy chic table, made up with a selection of sweet treats in a pink and white palette, also by Sadie May Cakes and one straight from the pages of our last issue...

Is anybody else suddenly very hungry?
